LOCATION

Silk Way – From East to West From time immemorial the caravan routes of the Silk Road invariably caressed Azerbaijan. İt served as the “gate” between mysterious faraway China and rich Europe. Since ancient times, Azerbaijan has played the role of a melting pot of civilizations, the venue and major transfer point of different cultural traditions and customs. The intangible heritage of Azerbaijan, diverse and rich, continues to live and to be transmitted from generation to generations. From cultural and historic point of view Azerbaijan has tight ties with the Silk Road history and was strongly affected by its development. One of the bright evidences of the strong link between the Silk Road and Azerbaijan is “Seven Beauties” of great poet Nizami Ganjavi (1141-1209, Ganja, Azerbaijan) in which he allegorically describes the countries lying along this great Road.

In its history eleven major earthquakes have rocked Shamakhi, but through multiple reconstructions it maintained its role as the economic and administrative capital of Shirvan and one of the key towns on the Silk Road. The only building to have survived eight of the eleven earthquakes is the landmark Juma Mosque of Shamakhi, built in the 10th century. On the way, visit Diri Baba mausoleum in Maraza village. • Caravansarai, . This building was constructed by the Sheki Khans to house caravans as they passed through on the Silk Road to and from China. This was one of 5 such stops in Azerbaijan during the 18th and 19th centuries, and was the biggest caravanserai on the Silk Road in the entire Transcaucasus region. To this day, it still serves as a place for travellers to stay and eat, and also as a place where one can simply admire its beautiful architecture.
    • Khansarai (Palace of the Sheki Khans), (on the upper main historical monument reserve), this palace, along with the Caravansarai, is one of Sheki’s true must-sees. During the city’s period of independence as the Sheki Khanate, Khan Hussein constructed the palace, its gardens, and fortifications to serve as the summer palace of the Sheki Khans. The palace is exquisite, inside and out, and the courtyard boasts panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountain forests.

Silk Factory (İpək Kombinat). Sheki, in addition to being on the Silk Road, has itself been a major silk producer over the past four centuries, and is famous for its various silk products. Sheki’s silk factory is about a 15 minute walk from the center of town. It is quite difficult to gain entrance into the factory. There is store adjoining the factory where vendors sell very fine silk items. You would find moderate price items at the bazaar and private souvenir shops in “Khansarai”

    • Juma Mosque (Juma Məscid), this picturesque mosque has a 40m spire, from which you will hear the resounding call to prayer 5 times a day. It was built from 1745-1750 and is decorated with exquisite geometric designs.
